Kelly Woodruff and Robert A. Roth, Certified Appellate Law Specialists practicing with the California Appellate Law Group, will address advanced issues in preparing a case for appeal such as maneuvering the statement of decision process, strategically using post-trial motions to bolster an appeal, and ensuring pivotal facts are properly reflected in the record.

Kelly Woodruff is a certified appellate specialist who has represented clients and amici curiae in dozens of significant appeals and writs in the state and federal appellate courts.  She has developed a sub-specialty in handling family law appeals and writs and regularly consults with trial counsel on preparation for trial and strategizing for clients who are thinking ahead to an eventual appeal.  Kelly clerked for the Honorable James R. Browning of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Honorable David A. Ezra of the U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii.  She is listed in U.S News & World Report’s Best Lawyers in America and has been repeatedly selected as an appellate SuperLawyer in Northern California.  She graduated magna cum laude from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where she served as Senior Executive Editor for the Hastings Law Journal.


For over 30 years, Robert A. Roth has exclusively practiced appellate law and consulted on trials heading for appeal.  Rob is widely regarded as one of California’s leading family law appellate specialists. He has been lead counsel in more than 25 published decisions, representing the prevailing parties in such high profile cases as In re Marriage of Sonne (2010) 48 Cal.4th 118, In re Marriage of Ostler and Smith (1990) 223 Cal.App.3d 33 and In re Marriage of Ciprari (2019) 32 Cal.App.5th 83, 110.  Rob is a Martindale Hubbell AV rated attorney, is listed in U.S News & World Report’s Best Lawyers in America, and has been repeatedly selected as a SuperLawyer in Northern California.
