Featuring Jeff Riebel and Chris Cannon

Moderator: Joe Crawford

Jeff Riebel and Chris Cannon will discuss criminal issue spotting in family law, including 5th amendment issues (when to assert it and possible ramifications of assertation), fraud/conspiracy and their relation to the 5th amendment, as well as tax fraud-related issues. They will also be discussing the designation of kidnapping as it relates to child custody and withholding a child from another party, as well as issues related to the police and DA’s roles in these scenarios and the complications which may flow from the involvement of the authorities.

Jeff Riebel is an outstanding litigator whose extensive practice encompasses all aspects of family law. Jeff is a Certified Family Law Specialist, approved by the California Board of Legal Specialization. His skill has been noted in high-conflict and high-asset cases throughout the state of California. In addition to family law matters, Jeff has been a Public Defender and business development specialist. Jeff graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. He was also a member of their varsity basketball team. He attended the Sorbonne in Paris, France, received his legal education at the Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C. and was awarded a Juris Doctor degree. Jeff is licensed to practice law in California and the District of Columbia.


Chris Cannon graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1976 and Southwestern University Law School where he was a member of the Law Review, in 1979. Following graduation, Chris clerked for two years for the Hon. William Sweigert, a United States District Judge for the Northern District of California. Chris then worked for the Santa Clara County Public Defender's Office and after a year left to join the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of California, where he remained until he established the firm of Sugarman & Cannon. Chris has a particular expertise in fraud and tax cases, and has represented many individuals and companies charged with financial wrong doing, at trial and on appeal. In many white collar cases, his early advice and intervention has been able to convince the authorities not to file charges.


Known for his expert handling of complex financial issues underlying sophisticated divorces and dissolutions, Joseph Crawford represents a range of Silicon Valley senior executives and their spouses.Joe has litigated the full spectrum of disputes and legal protections that arise in high-net worth divorces. He combines powerful and effective resolution techniques with an enduring commitment to his clients’ future well-being. Joe splits his practice between San Mateo and San Francisco.
