Featuring Kenneth J. Pia, Jr.  and Kelly J. Shindell DeLacey, Esq.

This presentation will review the ins and outs of valuing hedge funds and private equity. Mr. Pia and Ms. Shindell DeLacey will review key terms and concepts necessary for navigating hedge fund and private equity valuations, review applicable valuation methodologies, and identify various special considerations related to interests in private equity / venture capital funds.


Kenneth J. Pia, Jr., CPA, ABV, ASA, MCBA is a partner and the leader of the National Matrimonial and Business Valuation groups of Marcum LLP. With more than 30 years of professional business valuation and litigation support experience, Mr. Pia has developed a national reputation working on a wide range of complex valuation engagements. He has performed valuations of businesses and partial business interests for a variety of purposes including, but not limited to, family law matters, employee stock ownership plans, business damages, buy-sell agreements, shareholder litigation, estate and gift tax matters, and buying and selling businesses.

Ken is a past Chair of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) Business Valuation Committee and a member of the National Business Valuation Education Sub Committee. Mr. Pia is also a Co-Chair of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Foundation’s Forensic & Business Valuation Division.

Ken is qualified as an expert witness in Federal District Court and State Courts of Connecticut, Florida, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, New York, Virginia and California as well as various arbitration proceedings. He has also rendered extensive services relating to court testimony.


Kelly J. Shindell DeLacey, Esq., CFLS, AAML, IAFL is a founding partner with DeLacey, Riebel & Shindell, LLP in San Francisco, CA. Kelly has extensive experience in litigating complex high asset and high income cases, including cases involving property characterization and apportionment, valuation of privately held business interests, premarital, and marital agreements, and cases involving high earner and high standard of living child and spousal support. In addition to advocating for her clients in the courtroom, Kelly is highly skilled in mediation and settlement.


Before joining DeLacey, Riebel & Shindell, Kelly was a Partner at Sideman & Bancroft. Kelly is a Fellow with the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) and International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL). Kelly is also a Fellow with the American Bar Foundation (ABF). She has been named a Super Lawyer in Northern California (2014-2023) in Northern California Super Lawyers magazine and as an outstanding young lawyer on the Northern California Rising Stars list (2009-2013). Kelly was also named as a Top 100 Lawyer in Northern California in 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023, as well as Top 50 Woman Lawyers in Northern California Super Lawyers magazine in 2017 - 2023.
